Chrissy Chambers, a celebrity “YouTuber”, has succeeded in winning a substantial sum of damages against her ex-boyfriend after he filmed and uploaded sex tapes to free porn sites on the internet without her knowledge or informed consent.
This is the first civil case of its kind to be brought in the UK. It has been illegal to post private sexual images online without consent in England since April 2015 but criminal law did not apply in this case as the videos of Chambers were uploaded in 2011.
The 26-year-old, Chrissy Chambers sued her former partner for harassment, breach of confidence and misuse of private information. As well as damages she has won copyright of the videos meaning she could now pursue any website that hosts them.
This case sends out a strong message to “revenge porn” victims that they now have the legal powers to defend themselves.
