Recently, there has been an amendment to the Employments Rights Bill regarding the legal right for a parent to take time off work if they experience pregnancy loss during any stage
Currently, the allocation of a fortnight’s bereavement leave is only available to parents if they lose an unborn child after 24 weeks of pregnancy.
This change would apply in England, Scotland & Wales – But not Northern Ireland.
The proposed leave entitlement would see parents paid either statutory bereavement pay or 90% of the average weekly earnings – Whichever is lowest.

Many individuals suffer in silence, often feeling unable to share their loss (even with their employers) because miscarriage was never recognised as a form of bereavement deserving of formal, protected leave. Therefore, this reform is a very welcome and compassionate step forward which formally recognises the emotional hardship of early pregnancy loss.
We can assist with ensuring company policies are up to date to reflect these changes once made.
